General Questions

What is the Humanitarian Internship Program Pilot (HIPP)?

HIPP is a program that connects eligible GW students with humanitarian organizations for professional internships, providing hands-on experience addressing critical global and local challenges.

 Who is eligible to apply?

Full-time undergraduate students in the classes of 2026 and 2027 and graduate students are eligible to apply. Part-time undergraduate students, exchange students, and alumni are not eligible.

When does the program take place?

The internships will be conducted during Summer 2025.

What is the application deadline?

Applications open on January 13th, 2025, and close on February 4th, 2025, or when 200 applications are received, whichever comes first.

How many students will be accepted to the first cohort?

This program is highly competitive. Only 20 students will be accepted to the Summer 2025 Cohort.

Application Questions

What materials are required for the application?

Applicants must submit an unofficial transcript, resume, responses to two essay questions, and indicate their desired role.

How will students be selected?

Applications will be reviewed for academic standing, disciplinary records, and alignment with program goals. Select applicants may also be interviewed by the prospective internship site.

Can students apply for specific internships?

Students apply to the program, and placements will be determined through a matching process based on students' skills and interests.

Are international students eligible?

Yes, as long as they meet the eligibility requirements and have the necessary work authorization.

Internship Details

What types of roles are available?

Internship roles include research, communications, digital media, grant writing, program monitoring, volunteer coordination, and more.

Where will internships take place?

Internships may be remote, hybrid, or in-person (DC-based), depending on the host organization.

Will participants receive training or orientation?

Yes, selected interns will participate in an orientation session before starting their roles.

What is the time commitment?

Internships are full-time during the summer (35 - 40 hours per week)

Compensation and Housing

How are participants paid?

Students will be paid by George Washington University on a monthly stipend basis.

Is housing provided?

Housing is available for undergraduate students upon request.
