Statement to GW Community from President Granberg

September 7, 2023

Dear Members of the George Washington University Community,

I want to acknowledge the public safety emergency on our campus yesterday involving a dangerous individual who escaped police custody at GW Hospital. I know this event caused fear, anxiety and uncertainty across our campuses, and I want to assure you that the university is here to provide support during this stressful time. Your health and security will always remain our foremost priority.

This is an important moment for us to come together as a GW community, and I encourage you to show your support for one another. Different people experience these events in different ways, and I hope you will utilize the resources that are available to all members of our community. Students may contact Counseling and Psychological Services or the Division for Student Affairs. Faculty and staff may contact Human Resource Management and Development and the Employee Assistance Program.

GW continues to work closely with the Metropolitan Police Department throughout this process, and we will continue to update the community as needed.

Sincerely,

Ellen M. Granberg
President
