Recognizing Black History Month

February 1, 2023

Dear Members of the George Washington University Community,

As our university community marks Black History Month, we acknowledge the importance of this dedicated time to pause, reflect, and come together in meaningful ways that recognize the history and contributions of Black people. I am very proud of our Black students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and I am grateful to all in our community who are actively striving for racial justice and working toward anti-racism.

I understand that this year, we will gather as many continue to feel the hurt, pain, and trauma after recent events, including the senseless and brutal beating carried out by police that resulted in the death of Tyre Nichols. But as always, I know that our community will join to offer our support to one another, attend our student-led Black Heritage Celebration events, and participate in efforts that uplift Black people.

I look forward to continuing to support this important work and strengthening equitable and inclusive spaces and opportunities for members of the Black community, both at our university and beyond.

Sincerely yours,

Mark S. Wrighton
