Dear Members of the George Washington University Community,
I am writing to share that Christopher Alan Bracey has decided to step back from his role as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. After more than a decade of distinguished service in leadership roles at GW—including the past four years as Provost—he has chosen to return to the faculty at GW Law to pursue his passion for legal scholarship and teaching. Chris will depart his position on June 30 and will be on sabbatical for one year.
Throughout his time at GW, Chris has been an exceptional leader and a dedicated advocate for our academic mission. As Provost, he contributed to GW’s admission to the Association of American Universities and launched three university-wide institutes: the Global Food Institute, the Equity Institute, and the Alliance for a Sustainable Future. Under his guidance, GW also welcomed the most qualified and diverse classes in the university’s history, developed new shared governance principles, and improved our guidelines for academic freedom and free expression.
There is no doubt that his leadership has made a lasting impact on our academic community. Among his many achievements, Chris has overseen the hiring of three university deans and established the GW Academic Leadership Academy, which is now in its sixth successful year. Most recently, he has played a critical role in developing our new strategic framework and budget model—both of which will shape our university’s trajectory for years to come.
On a personal note, Chris has been an invaluable partner and close friend throughout my presidency. His comprehensive and deep understanding of GW was instrumental during my transition to the university, just as it was for Presidents LeBlanc and Wrighton. Over the past two years, I have appreciated his counsel, welcomed his candor, and admired his commitment to our students, faculty, and staff. I am grateful that he will continue to contribute to our community as a member of our distinguished law faculty.
I am also pleased to share that John Lach, Dean of GW’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, has agreed to serve as interim provost while a national search for GW’s next chief academic officer gets underway. A proven academic leader, John is exceptionally well-prepared to step into this important role. I look forward to sharing more information about the search soon.
Please join me in thanking John for taking on this interim leadership role and in thanking Chris Bracey for his steadfast leadership and dedication to GW. We are a stronger university because of their service.
Sincerely,
Ellen M. Granberg
President
