Bust of George Washington

Dear GW Community Members,

Today, the university, Medical Faculty Associates, Inc. (MFA) and Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS) announced a definitive agreement on a sustainable framework for the continued provision of patient care at GW Hospital, Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center and affiliated outpatient sites, as well as high-quality medical education and research at GW’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS). You can read the full details of our announcement in GW Today.

When I arrived at GW in 2023, it was clear that while our academic medical partnership had served this institution and community in important ways, it was also facing serious financial pressures that had developed over many years. As we reviewed the growing scale of university support needed to sustain the MFA’s operating losses, it became evident that more significant changes were necessary to put the partnership between GW, MFA and UHS on better financial footing.

Throughout this process, our focus has been on protecting patient care, creating a sustainable financial framework, maintaining GW’s academic and educational enterprise, and supporting our students, faculty, and staff and the patients and community members who rely on them. This agreement will help secure a sustainable path forward and marks an important step for GW and the communities we serve.

Moving forward, GW’s faculty will continue to teach and train the next generation of physicians at SMHS. GW will continue to fund education activities in support of the vital role GW physicians play in teaching and mentoring students, residents and fellows. This new agreement also preserves the Undergraduate Medical Education and Graduate Medical Education programs at GW Hospital, with GW’s medical faculty serving those programs.

While this agreement marks an important step for GW’s future, I know this news brings change and challenge for some members of our community. Between now and the closing of this agreement, we will work with the MFA and UHS to ensure a smooth transition that maintains the outstanding medical education, patient care, research and community support at the core of GW’s mission.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to make GW stronger.

Sincerely,

Ellen M. Granberg
President
