Election Day 2024

November 5, 2024

Vote pin on top of American flag

Dear Members of the George Washington University Community,

Today marks a pivotal moment in our nation's democratic process. As citizens take to the polls across the country, I am reminded of the unique position our university holds at the heart of American democracy. For over two centuries, GW has stood at the center of our nation's civic life, and today is no exception.

Our community has always been among the most politically active and engaged in the nation. From volunteering at polling stations and providing thoughtful discourse and expert commentary to running for elected office, you exemplify what it means to be conscientious and committed citizens. Today, I encourage each of you to continue this proud tradition by making your voice heard at the ballot box.

As we all know, elections, by their very nature, will leave some celebrating and others disappointed. The hours, days, weeks, and months ahead will affect each of us differently, and we must all process in our own way. Passionate debate and principled argument will, and should, continue to drive our conversations. And yet, as we navigate this national transition in GW’s classrooms, community spaces, and residence halls, I hope you will also join me in upholding our shared values of understanding, respect, and mutual support.

Democracy isn't just in our DNA at GW—it's our legacy and our future. Today and in the days to come, we have both the opportunity and responsibility to shape that future together by modeling the very best of who we are—an engaged, passionate, and respectful community.

Sincerely,

Ellen M. Granberg

President
