Dear Members of the George Washington University Community,
This past week, I have been reflecting on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the impact it is having on many members of our university community and beyond. I have heard from individuals who are hurting and fearful, and as President of our university, I believe it is important to recognize this pain and share the university’s support for women and for all members of our community. This is a significant moment in history, and understandably many are having very strong, deeply personal reactions.
Our university’s role is to always support our community and your health and safety. I have asked the leadership to share more information about our resources, support, and guidance on topics related to health care in the coming weeks. At the same time, our university’s mission is to provide the teaching and research that addresses pressing challenges and brings positive solutions to the country and our world. This means something different to each member of our community. However, I hope we will remain bound by the ideals of fostering an inclusive community; supporting open inquiry, rigorous study, and debate; and advocating for what we believe is right.
